Abstract

The "Catena in Marcum" commonly attributed to Victor of Antioch, is the earliest anthology of patristic commentary on the gospel according to St Mark. Its compilation dates from the end of the fifth century and the beginning of the sixth century. Providing the first extended English translation, this book identifies the range of patristic sources employed by the editors, and the historiographical, literary and dogmatic concerns which informed the editing and compilation of this important text. It provides an invaluable resource for those interested in the history and development of the interpretation of Mark.

Abstract

In The Text of Marcion’s Gospel Dieter T. Roth offers a new, critical reconstruction of Marcion’s Gospel including various levels of certainty for readings in this Gospel text. An extensive history of research, overview of both attested and unattested verses in the various sources, and methodological considerations related, in particular, to understanding the citation customs of the sources set the stage for a comprehensive analysis of all relevant data concerning Marcion’s Gospel. On the basis of this new reconstruction significant issues in the study of early Christianity, including the relationship between Marcion’s Gospel and Luke and the place of Marcion in the history of the canon and the formation of the fourfold Gospel, can be considered anew.

Abstract

Jeff Jay argues that the Gospel of Mark should be described as tragic because it elicits tragedy's recurring motifs and moods as well as a highly theatrical atmosphere. He thus revises the typical story of tragic drama's history, which portrays the Judeo-Christian tradition as inhospitable to tragedy because it emphasizes divine grace and justice.

Abstract

Most scholars believe that Mark's Gospel was completed before Matthew and Luke. Drawing on recently discovered historical, literary, and linguistic evidence, C. S. Mann proposes the controversial theory that Mark followed the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, and that it is a digest of those two other Synoptic Gospels. Lay readers and serious students of the Bible may disagree with Mann, but they cannot ignore his theory. The Gospel of Mark presents an action-packed, nonstop picture of Jesus' public life. Here we encounter the humanity of Jesus, and the secrecy shrouding his divine nature. Through his lively translation and insightful commentary, Mann clearly explains the central message of Mark's Gospel: The power of faith and hope that moves the Christian community toward ultimate glory in the coming of the Lord and His Kingdom rests in the triumph of the suffering Christ. The themes in Mark -- the suffering of Jesus, the liberation of the oppressed, the search for community, and the healing power of Christ -- echo the turbulent times during which he wrote this Gospel. The unthinkable destruction of Jerusalem by the Roman army, the persecution of early followers of Jesus, and the rampant obsession with the end of the world are reflected in Mark's stories and parables.
